First, let’s get technical; MILF is an acronym that means “mother I’d like to fuck” and, in pornography, it pertains mostly to women between the ages of 35 and 45. This niche falls under the category of “mature” and has plenty of correlated terms such as DILF (“dad I’d like to fuck”), cougar (an older woman as a sexual predator), and GILF (“granny I’d like to fuck”); but it was MILF that started it all.

Anyone who’s casually browsed a porn site (and that’s basically everyone) has certainly come across the term before, and maybe even indulged in a MILF video or two; they are everywhere. In the porn business, this niche is most definitely a prolific one, with MILF being the second most searched for term in the world according to PornMD.com.

The idea of an older woman seducing a younger man is not a new one; the first example that comes to mind is Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate (1967) seducing a fresh-out-of-college Benjamin Braddock. This groundbreaking film even predates the term MILF, which was popularized by the 1999 film American Pie. In this last movie, the term was used to refer to “Stifler’s mom”, played by Jennifer Coolidge, who devirginizes a grateful teen. And, after that, it had a snowball effect, sweeping through the world and identifying older women as attractive and desirable sexual partners.

This leads to the question: how is it that 15 years later, not only is the term MILF alive and well, but also a growing pornographic category? What is it that attracts heterosexual men to these moms? From an evolutionary point of view, it’s clear why men are attracted to women in their fertile peak (teens), so why is it that there seems to be a fascination with older women who, in biological terms, are not likely to pass along their genetic material?

One answer could be attributed to Sigmund Freud and his theory of the Oedipus Complex. This basically states that all young men go through a short-lived stage where they desire their mothers sexually and hate their fathers, though most get over this. However, it’s been almost a hundred years since this theory was presented and, since then, there’s been little scientific research to back it up.

Another explanation could be that more mature women are seen as having a bigger sexual appetite than their younger counterparts. It is said that women don’t reach their sexual peak until their 30s, making them a better match for young horny men in the sack. A fairly recent study seems to support this idea. This document, called Reproduction expediting: Sexual motivations, fantasies, and the ticking biological clock, claims there’s a correlation between women’s desire for sex and their declining fertile years. Apparently the “ticking clock” phenomena is alive and kicking, urging females to think more about sex and even engage in the activity with more frequency and vigor. But this can’t be all there is.

This leads me to think that men are also finding the older woman’s take-charge attitude very arousing, indeed. And this, more than any other explanation mentioned above, seems to make a lot of sense.
